Monitoring Activity

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The primary use for Activity Monitor is, as the name implies, to monitor system activity.  The main part of the window is devoted to activity monitoring and is split into two panes, as shown in the figure above.  The left pane is a tree view that allows you to select which kind(s) of activity you want to monitor, and the right pane displays the activity you selected.

Viewing Activity History

The default view, as shown above, lists only the most-recent activity for a given line or service. You can toggle an alternative, "scrolling log" view by clicking the toolbar button highlighted in the figure below.  Click the button a second time to switch back to normal view.

MSC0115

The "scrolling log" view switches the right pane to display activity entries as a scrolling log, meaning that instead of updating a given line in the table each time a new entry arrives for a given line or service, it is instead added at the bottom of the list.  Where the normal view allows you to see the current state of the machine at a glance, this view allows you to review the history of activity over a period of time.  The figure below shows an example of this view:

MSC0119

One visual cue that you are viewing in scrolling mode instead of normal mode is that the table re-orders the columns so Date appear first, followed by Time, Source, and Summary.  In normal mode, the Source column is listed first.

Filtering Out Idle Lines

You can hide any entries marked as Idle by clicking the second icon on the toolbar, as shown highlighted in the figure below.  Click on the icon a second time to restore those entries.

MSC0114

Clearing the View

If you wish to clear the right pane of all entries, which may be useful when viewing in scrolling log mode, select View | Clear from the menu or click the fourth icon on the toolbar, as shown highlighted in the figure below:

MSC0117

Note: This icon will only be enabled if the right pane is currently selected.  If the selection is on the left pane, this option is disabled.

Changing the Font

Activity Monitor provides two font options for the text displayed in the right pane: Small and Large.  By default, the small font is used.  To toggle between the two fonts, click the third icon on the toolbar, as shown highlighted in the figure below:

MSC0116

Note: This icon will only be enabled if the right pane is currently selected.  If the selection is on the left pane, this option is disabled.

The figure below shows an example of Activity Monitor with the large font enabled:
