Using the last name for the password

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

By default, all guest mailboxes are set to use the password 1234.  Some PMS protocols, however, send a password string as part of the check in message packet.  Typically, this field is a 4 character string composed of the first 4 letters of the guest's last name.  In such a case, the VMS will set the mailbox password to the DTMF digits that match the string sent by the PMS.

If the PMS protocol you are using does not send a password in the check in message but does send the guest name, you can enable this feature to have the VMS use the name field to create the mailbox password.  When enabled, the VMS will take the first 4 characters of the name field and convert them into their DTMF digit equivalents (e.g., the digit 2 for the letters A, B or C, etc.).

If the protocol uses separate fields for the first and last name of the guest, the last name field will be used.  If there is only one field for the name, the VMS will parse the field to determine the first and last names, and will then use the last name to create the password.

When the protocol only has a single name field, it is parsed as follows by default:

1. Everything up to the first comma, space or slash character is considered to be the last name.
2. If a comma, space or slash is found, then it is thrown out.  All subsequent characters are thrown out until a character is found that is not a comma, space or slash.
3. All remaining characters, regardless of what they are, are stored as the first name.

Note: This feature is only valid if the PMS protocol supplies the guest name as part of the Check In message packet.  If the name is sent in a separate message packet, or not at all, the password will not be changed.

To enable (or disable) using the last name for the password, follow these steps:
